Throw the boomerang with a swipe, and then comes the part nobody warns you about: you have to catch it on the way back. Catch it and it's a point. Let it fall and a life's gone, three total. It starts with a clean arc, out and back, easy to track. Then the throws get faster, obstacles drift into the path, and it comes back at angles that make you flinch. There's a primal little joy in a one-handed grab, snatching it out of the air. And a particular shame when it thuds past your fingers and lies there while the run keeps counting. Dust it off. Throw again. The return is always the part that matters.
