Number Match Mahjong: Pair & Ten
Gameplay
Number Match Mahjong takes the classic layered-tile puzzle format everyone knows from traditional mahjong solitaire and gives it a fresh numerical twist. Instead of matching tiles by suit or symbol, every tile on the board displays a number from 1 to 9, stacked in cascading pyramids and clusters across the play area. Your goal is simple to learn but endlessly engaging to master: clear the board by removing tiles in matching pairs.
A pair can be cleared in one of two ways. First, you can match two tiles showing the same number ? two 7s, two 3s, two 9s, and so on. Second, and this is where the game distinguishes itself from standard mahjong, you can match any two tiles whose numbers add up to exactly 10 ? a 4 paired with a 6, a 2 paired with an 8, a 1 paired with a 9, or a 5 paired with another 5. This dual-matching system doubles your strategic options at every turn and forces you to constantly scan the board for two different kinds of opportunities rather than just one.
Only tiles that are "free" ? not covered by another tile above them, and open on at least one side ? can be selected and matched. As you clear pairs, tiles beneath are exposed, opening up new combinations and gradually unraveling even the most tightly packed stacks. Levels increase in complexity as you progress, introducing taller stacks, tighter clusters, and trickier numeric arrangements that require you to think several moves ahead.
The Twist: The Holding Slot
What really sets this game apart is the tension mechanic at the top of the screen. When you're stuck and can't find a valid pair, you can send an unmatched tile up into a small holding area rather than losing immediately. But that space is limited. Every tile you park there without resolving takes up precious room, and if that holding area completely fills up before you clear it, the level ends in failure. This turns every uncertain move into a real decision: do you gamble by holding a tile in hopes of using it later, or do you hold back and search harder for a direct match first? It's a simple rule that adds a surprising amount of pressure and strategic depth, transforming a calm tile-matching game into a genuine puzzle of risk management.
Features
Two matching modes in one game: identical-number pairs and sum-to-10 pairs, blending arithmetic thinking with classic visual pattern recognition.
Progressive level structure: each level (starting from Level 1) presents a new tile layout with its own layered geometry, increasing in size and difficulty as you advance.
Color-coded numbers: tiles are tinted in different colors (red, green, blue, black) to help you visually distinguish values at a glance, especially useful when scanning for sum-to-10 combinations quickly.
Risk-based holding mechanic: the limited-capacity top slot adds a fail condition that rewards careful planning over frantic clicking.
Clean, tactile tile design: soft-edged ivory tiles with bold central numerals sit on a rich green felt background, evoking the tactile satisfaction of physical mahjong tiles while keeping the numeric focus crisp and readable.
Appeal
Number Match Mahjong appeals to two overlapping audiences at once: fans of traditional mahjong solitaire who enjoy the meditative rhythm of clearing layered boards, and puzzle/number-game lovers who enjoy the quick mental arithmetic of games like sudoku or 2048. The sum-to-10 mechanic keeps your brain lightly engaged with simple math throughout, while the visual-matching mode keeps the pace brisk for players who just want to relax and clear tiles. The holding-slot fail condition adds just enough stakes to keep each level feeling meaningful without becoming stressful, striking a balance between casual, pick-up-and-play accessibility and satisfying strategic depth. Short session lengths make it ideal for quick breaks, while the escalating level difficulty gives dedicated players a long-term sense of progression and mastery.
